Mind’s Eye Floaters

Role-play and embodiment are central to my practice. In this body of work, folklore and landscape merge to speculate how woodland inhabitants might camouflage and roam the wild. Through the craft of hand hooking, I connect with my family’s history and historic craft practice in the settler cultures of Newfoundland and New Brunswick. Traditional East Coast hand-hooked rug making, characterized by utility, material reuse and storytelling, is reconfigured into land-immersive tactile masks, garments and topography sculptures depicting wild locations dear to me. I incorporate native plant imagery to explore themes of adaptation and resilience. This slow hand-making connects me to the places that reside in my memory. When these curious wearables are worn in site-specific wild places, new strange stories emerge, set in motion using lens-based media and kinetic components. The work reveals the body for what it is- wild, active, and transformational.
